Passport Photo Size India 2026 — Digital vs Print Format Guide

India uses two different passport photo sizes: 35×45mm for digital submissions and 51×51mm (2×2 inch) for printed applications. Here's when to use which format and how to get it right.

One of the most confusing aspects of Indian passport photos is the size. Different sources say different things — some say 35×45mm, others say 2×2 inches (51×51mm). The truth is both sizes are correct, but for different purposes. This guide clears up exactly when to use each format.

Two Sizes, Two Purposes

India has two parallel passport photo specifications that coexist. The format you need depends entirely on how you're submitting your application.

FormatSizePixelsUsed For
Digital (ICAO)35 × 45 mm630 × 810 pxOnline uploads, digital submissions
Print (Traditional)51 × 51 mm (2×2 in)600 × 600 px minPaper forms, OCI, VFS/BLS abroad

When You Need 35×45mm (Digital)

  • Passport Seva online applications where a digital photo upload is required
  • E-visa applications for other countries that accept ICAO format
  • Any online form that specifies 35×45mm or 630×810 pixels
  • Digital ID submissions to government portals

When You Need 51×51mm / 2×2 Inch (Print)

  • Paper passport applications submitted in person
  • OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) applications
  • VFS Global or BLS International submissions abroad
  • Embassy or consulate submissions requiring physical photos
  • Any form that asks for '2×2 inch passport photo'

Important: PSK Takes Your Photo Live

If you're applying for a fresh passport or renewal through Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) in India via the online portal, your photo is captured live at the centre during your appointment. You don't need to bring or upload a separate photo for this process. The confusion arises because many applicants prepare photos unnecessarily.

When you DO need a photo

You need a prepared photo for: OCI applications, tatkal paper submissions, BLS/VFS abroad, and any form that explicitly asks you to 'attach a passport size photograph'. If the form has an upload field for a photo, you need one.

File Size and Format Requirements

For digital submissions, the file must be JPEG format, typically between 10 KB and 250 KB. The Passport Seva portal specifically requires 630×810 pixels. Other portals may accept different resolutions but the 35×45mm aspect ratio (roughly 3.5:4.5) must be maintained.

How PhotoSure Helps

PhotoSure outputs your passport photo in the 35×45mm digital format (413×531 pixels at 300 DPI, or 630×810 for Passport Seva uploads). The 4×6 print sheet option gives you 8 photos ready for physical submissions. Both formats from a single upload.
